MKC choose Kasa Controls & Automation to automate the Sumner County Terminal in Milan, KS. Most of the grain in this facility comes from other elevators across south-central Kansas and is stored until it is loaded on a train and sent to the U.S. milling market or to port elevators to be exported to other countries. The Milan facility is unique because it can load a train in 5 ½ to 6 hours resulting in tremendous cost savings.

MKC Canton First Loadout »

MKC First Shuttle Loadout at Canton Grain Terminal

In late December, MKC (Mid Kansas Coop) loaded the first shuttle at their Canton Grain Terminal. Engineers from Kasa Controls & Automation were on-site to witness the successful transfer of grain from bins to 109 hopper cars that arrived early in the morning to be loaded. Typically, 110 cars are loaded at a time to deliver to facilities in the Gulf Coast, Pacific Northwest and elsewhere. The Canton Grain Terminal includes a loop track that has room for up to 120 hopper cars.

Steve Reed, Kasa's Vice President of Safety and Engineering, will be a guest speaker at the 30-hour OSHA Class being offered by KFSA (Kansas Farmers Insurance Association). This comprehensive course will be held at the KFSA offices in Hutchinson, KS on April 6-9. Reed will present on electrical safety and NFPA 70E.

Their project was featured in this year’s Discovery Gallery and was on display throughout the Ignition Community Conference. Entitled “Fine Grained Precision”, this projects main focus was to control and track grain.

The system is highly automated with the help of Kasa Controls & Automation and the use of their database-driven Konnection software. With many different pieces of equipment and systems to manage, Konnection provides overview screens, monitoring screens, alarms and reports into one location for simpler diagnostics and review of the system.

Grain Shuttle Automates & Tracks Data Increasing Throughput »

Frenchman Valley Coop expands its operations by adding Culbertson shuttle site.  All operations throughout the facility are computerized and designed to be fail-safe, wired by control engineers Kelton Neighbors and Nimit Shah of kasa Controls and Automation, Salina, Kansas. Control panels track grain movement ("The grain can't go into the wrong bin," Neighbors said); monitor hazards and log graphs (for down-to-the-minute tracking for up to two years).

"We try to bring all (operations) of the facility into the grading shack -- making the facility's operations as simple and as safe as possible," he said. A sophisticated camera system aids the staff in probing and sampling inbound and outbound grains and serves as surveillance for the purpose of security throughout the entire facility.
